Psychophysical models of masking for coding applications

چکیده

In this article we apply signal detection theory to qualitatively unify the intensity justnoticable difference (JND) and masking data of Wegel and Lane (1924), Fletcher and Munson (1933 – 1938), Miller (1947), and Egan and Hake (1950). We do this by treating the loudness as the first moment, and the intensity JND as the second moment, of the random variable we call the single-trial loudness. From these definitions we define a loudness signal-to-noise ratio (SNRL), which is the unifying factor. This theory relies heavily on Fletcher and Munson’s 1933 theory of loudness. The purpose of this article is to create a model of masking that may be used for speech and music coding applications.

A computationally efficient cochlear filter bank for perceptual audio coding

Many applications in auditory modeling require analysis filters that approximate the frequency selectivity given by psychophysical data, e.g. from masking experiments using narrow-band maskers. This frequency selectivity is largely determined by the spectral decomposition process inside the human cochlea. Currently used spectral decomposition schemes for masking modeling in audio coding general...

A Color Contrast Definition for Perceptually based Color Image Coding

The non-linear nature of the human visual response to achromatic contrast is a key element to improve the performance in achromatic image coding. Expressing transform coefficients in the appropriate contrast units is relevant when some particular non-linear processing hasto be applied. In the achromatic case, the use of non-linear psychophysical models is straightforward since achromatic contra...

Comparison of auditory masking models for speech coding

In this paper various auditory masking models recently developed for audio coding are compared and evaluated for telephone bandwidth speech coding applications. Four such models are outlined and their performance evaluated using a Wavelet Packet Transform based subband coder. The models are compared on the basis of the resulting perceptual speech quality and bit rate requirements. Results show ...

Visibility of noise in natural images

The degree of visibility of any kind of stimulus is largely determined by the background on which it is shown, a property commonly known as masking. Many psychophysical experiments have been carried out to date to understand masking of sinusoids or Gabor targets by similar maskers and by noise, and a variety of masking models have been proposed. However, these stimuli are artificial and quite s...

Masking within and across visual dimensions: psychophysical evidence for perceptual segregation of color and motion.

Visual masking can result from the interference of perceptual signals. According to the principle of functional specialization, interference should be greatest when signal and mask belong to the same visual attribute (e.g., color or motion) and least when they belong to different ones. We provide evidence to support this view and show that the time course of masking is visual attribute specific...
